Flushometer Repair in Salt Lake City
Cost-effective and convenient, flushometers are widespread in modern public restrooms. When measured against the design of traditional gravity-flush toilets that are common to residential homes, flushometers are far stronger and water-efficient.
Of course, like all plumbing fixtures, a flushometer will occasionally break down or fail to operate at maximum efficiency. When this happens, it can be difficult to find the right valves and components.
At Beehive Plumbing, we carry a wide variety of battery powered, solar powered, and water powered flushometers for the urinals and toilets of your commercial, institutional, or industrial restroom. Our selection includes both hands-free and handle-operated parts.
Flushometer Repair
Flushometers are metal water-diverters that connect directly to plumbing lines for commercial toilets and urinals. This allows the device to flush waste using water pressure from the main water supply, eliminating any need for the standing tanks of water that are necessary in gravity-flush toilets.
Helping businesses keep restrooms clean, comfortable, and operating at peak capacity, flushometers are extremely powerful and reliable.
Flushometers have to undergo rigorous testing before they can be introduced to the marketplace. Some models are tested to ensure they can complete at least 250,000 flushes. This sounds like a huge amount at first, but think about commercial facilities such as hospitals, arenas, and airports. These places often go through more than 5,000 flushes per month, so 250,000 flushes can take place in just four years.
Like every fixture and fitting, flushometer repair will need to happen from time to time.
Eventually, some parts will need to be replaced to ensure the flushometer continues to function. Knowing when certain parts are showing signs of disintegration is valuable information.
The lifespan of your flushometer and its various parts will depend on the following factors:
Water quality: If you have high levels of chlorine or hard water then this can cause erosion over time.
Vandalism: In public buildings, toilets may be subject to abuse, misuse, and property damage that could affect your flushometer.
Installation: If your flushometer is not installed correctly, its performance can be affected. This can accelerate the deterioration process.
Proper parts replacement: Using the wrong replacement parts on your flushometer might negatively impact its performance thereby reducing its potential lifespan.
Commercial Flushometer Installation, Replacement, and Repair
Because flushometers require a water system that typically exceeds those found in private residences and smaller buildings, they are generally installed in commercial settings. When flushometers malfunction or fail, businesses must often find replacement and/or repair options quickly.
At Beehive Plumbing, we offer round-the-clock service 24/7 to better meet the needs of our commercial clients. Our skilled and knowledgeable plumbers are fully qualified to install, replace, and repair a wide range of flushometer units.
Common Flushometer Problems
The restrooms of commercial, institutional, and industrial organizations (such as retail shops, schools, and factories) tend to get plenty of traffic. This high-volume use can cause significant wear and tear to plumbing fixtures.
Although they generate a powerful flush that typically clears waste from pipes instantly and entirely, flushometers systems do clog from time to time. When this happens, they can create great problems for the layperson who simply doesn’t understand how to fix them.
However, our experienced professionals at Beehive Plumbing can repair any problems with your flushometer urinal or toilet. The most common issues associated with flushometers include:
Flushometers vs. Traditional Tank Toilets
Because they do not rely upon a raised water tank to operate, a toilet/urinal that uses a flushometer is able to eliminate the refill problems that plague traditional residential toilets. The absence of a tank also enables the design of far sleeker plumbing fixtures that can fit into far smaller spaces.
Flushometers provide a high-pressure flush that prevents clogs that might otherwise occur in gravity-flush toilets. And because they do not have tanks, flushometer-based toilets/urinals are significantly more tamper-proof. Flushometer units also offer a hands-free flushing option for maximum cleanliness and convenience.
Flushometers: All You Need to Know
The concept of a flushometer may be new to you, but you’ve undoubtedly used one before in your life. This isn’t something you’re likely to come across in a residential property, though. Residential toilets tend to use water tanks and gravity to flush. However, a toilet that uses a flushometer is tankless. It depends on the water pressure from the source. You’ll usually find these kinds of toilets in commercial buildings and public restrooms.
What does a flushometer do?
In a commercial bathroom, you’ll find a flushometer sitting above the toilet bowl. You won’t see the water tank that you’re used to in a residential toilet. What a flushometer does is releases a certain amount of water into the toilet on demand, then it closes back up.
In theory, a flushometer flush should use less water than a typical tank system. It cleanses the bowl with water that is lower in volume but higher in pressure. Because there isn’t a tank, there’s no refill time required between flushes. This is helpful in a high-traffic toilet situation, for example, at a football stadium.
What different kinds of flushometers are there?
You’ll find two essential kinds of flushometers: piston valves and diaphragm valves. They do have their similarities, though. In both systems, a high-pressure chamber is used in conjunction with a low-pressure chamber. The piston or diaphragm sits between the chambers, and it’s displaced when the flushometer is activated.
In both scenarios, the water is released through the valve by the changing of pressure within the chambers. The only real difference between the two is that one uses a rubber diaphragm while the other uses a molded cup, called a piston, between the chambers.
How are flushometers activated?
A flushometer can be activated by a button, a lever, or even a motion sensor. In electronic models, there is often a mechanical override which is installed too. If you have an older flushometer, there may still be the option to fit it with motion-sensor triggers that are operated by batteries. Get in touch with the Beehive team if this is an option that interests you.
Have you ever experienced an overly sensitive automatic flushometer? In a public bathroom, you might have found that the toilet flushed too often or too quickly. This is an issue that should be resolved otherwise it will negate potential water savings.
You might be interested in a dual-flush model, which offers two different volumes of flush depending on the waste that needs to be washed away. Rather than waste water on unnecessarily high volume flushing, you can opt for a lower volume flush when needed. This is another great way to save water.
Why aren’t flushometers used in residential properties?
Given the advantages of flushometers, it’s understandable to wonder why we don’t install them in our residential properties. The answer is simple: a flushometer isn’t suitable for all plumbing systems. For a start, the toilet itself has to be compatible with a low volume flush, which many older tank toilets are not. If you have a toilet that needs 5 gallons to flush, a 1.6gpf flushometer is totally inadequate.
In addition to this, the water piping had to allow for a high water pressure for the flushometer to work effectively. Given that piping in most homes is only 3/4 inches, this isn’t possible. Commercial plumbing systems are different, and this makes them better equipped to accommodate a flushometer.
When were flushometers first introduced?
Although the flushometer was first invented in 1906, it took a while for it to become a success. This was because it didn’t fit comfortably with plumbing systems at that time, so it took an overhaul of conventional plumbing to fit a flushometer. However, William Elvis Sloan of the Sloan Valve Company eventually found success with this product.
